Gallant Fourteenth: The Story Of An Indiana Civil War Regiment
Review
It has been twenty years since the first edition of Gallant Fourteenth: The Story Of An Indiana Civil War Regiment was published. It drew admiring comments as one of the first of the “new” regimental histories written not at the time of the war, but as later reflective works which put the experience of a unit of Civil War men into modern perspective.
Although modern regimental histories have now become commonplace, Gallant Fourteenth remains among the best regarded. Reliance on unusually strong on-the-spot diaries and letters, examination of the social background of southern Indiana which created such strong soldiering, and a deep sense of the humanity of the war experience mark this history of the Fourteenth as unique.
Guild Press of Indiana, Hardcover, 207 Pages, 1999
